Whitney Chadwick

Marcel Duchamp and Transgender Coupling
I found these images in a book edited by Whitney Chadwick: MIRROR women, surrealism and self-representation IMAGES. I thought they were a perfect example of narrative photography.

Lauren Greenfield

Since I won't be in class on Thursday, I wanted to post about the artist I chose. Greenfield does a lot of commercial/editorial work and many of these images she captures are from shoots for major magazines. Some of you might have seen a documentary she made about eating disorders, "Thin." She also recently made a short video called, "Foreclosure: Death of the American Dream.":

I enjoy her photographs and videos because they feel very contemporary and relatable to me. I appreciate the focus on issues facing young girls/teenagers and I think that she captures it from a point of understanding. The stories accompanying the photographs are written by the subjects themselves and are often heartbreaking. These photographs are from her book "Girl Culture":

Joel Peter Witkin

They call him Texas Chainsaw Massacre vs Bosch. His work often deals with such themes as death, corpses (and sometimes dismembered portions thereof), and various outsiders such as dwarfs, transsexuals, hermaphrodites, and physically deformed people. Witkin's complex tableaux often recall religious episodes or famous classical paintings.
If you can get over the fact that some of the images are a bit haunting and to some disturbing to look at, his technical skills can teach a lot to a learning photographer. Many of his images are careful staged during the shooting process. ....His work has been a major influence on my own. ENJOY

More works:

Joel Peter Witkin

Witkin claims that his vision and sensibility were initiated by an episode he witnessed when he was just a small child, a car accident that occurred in front of his house in which a little girl was decapitated.
“It happened on a Sunday when my mother was escorting my twin brother and me down the steps of the tenement where we lived. We were going to church. While walking down the hallway to the entrance of the building, we heard an incredible crash mixed with screaming and cries for help. The accident involved three cars, all with families in them. Somehow, in the confusion, I was no longer holding my mother's hand. At the place where I stood at the curb, I could see something rolling from one of the overturned cars. It stopped at the curb where I stood. It was the head of a little girl. I bent down to touch the face, to speak to it -- but before I could touch it someone carried me away".

Dave Hickey on Beauty

A short and interesting interview with Dave Hickey was on Here and Now today.
Hickey speaks about Museums as being in the business of fashion, showing what's hot. He insists that to find what's radical in art you must understand and consume the culture.
If you've read, The Invisible Dragon, this interview will sound familiar in it's tone. If you have not, get your hands on a copy and start reading.

The interesting and short interview can be found here:

The Chung

This is the website of reasonably successful art major that my friend graduated with.

His art is pretty bizarre, and he sold a painting to Edgar Wright (the guy that directed Shaun of the Dead).

It can be done!
